Why Arranged Marriage?

There is a lot of argument in the west regarding India's proven system of "Arranged Marriage". BBC is even running a show where the anchor, an Indian, uses the system of arranged marriage in a reality show kind of set up. The participant is made to meet up with a "groom of choice of parents". These are compared against what they would chose if they were into choosing a life partner for themselves. It is just a beginning, but this show is really creating waves western circles. As is known, westerners choose their life partners while in a pub or a hotel during a meeting and dating. The simple argument given is: "You will not buy a car while drunk, You will not buy a house while drunk; so why choose a partner for life when you are drunk? Makes sense!

In India, the institute of arranged marriage has been present since time immemorial. There are no written records as to when this practice actually started. But if we look at our old scriptures, most of the times the parents picked up a groom for their daughters considering many social factors. If they were not able to find a suitable groom for their daughters, daughters had the right to pick a groom for themselves, provided the groom was to the parents liking. This is most aptly described and illustrated in Ramayana. Since no suitable groom could be found for Sita, a Swayamvar was held where Sita chose Ram as her groom and he was finally accepted by Sita's father. I guess it is safe to presume that such a practice is followed in our society today as well. Surely makes me dance to Apache Indian's song "Arranged Marriage".
